High quality education for Syrian refugee children

Ghazzah, Libanon | 2024 | Orienthelfer e.V.
Access to school education is severely limited for Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. That is why the Society for Social Support and Education (SSSE) together with Orienthelfer e.V. offers a free informal education program recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEHE) in Ghazzah in the Bekaa Plain, which raises the level of education of Syrian children and prepares them for the Lebanese public school system.

The programme includes tailored lessons and ongoing support for refugee children. Syrian and Lebanese teachers lead the lessons five afternoons a week and are familiar with the special psychosocial needs of these children who are largely marginalised by society. Teaching the importance of education and involving parents in their children's education and psychosocial services is an integral part of the work.

The education programme at the school in Ghazzah includes Early Childhood Education (ECE) for kindergarten children, primary education for 7- to 12-year-olds and basic literacy and numeracy (BLN) for 12- to 15-year-old children.

Students who successfully complete the ECE and BLN programs can transfer to a public school at the end of the school year, giving them the chance to continue their education.

The Beurer Foundation has been supporting this educational project for Syrian children in Lebanon since summer 2024.
